OtsReg : Licensing a machine that is not connected to the Internet
This step-by-step picture guide is for licensing software using a
Product License
on a machine that is not connected to the internet. If you have been supplied
with a license
token please refer to the instructions in
Licensing with a Product Token.
Brief Objective:
To license a machine that is not connected to the internet by copying
a
Product License,
a
Machine License Request,
and a
Machine License
between
OtsReg
on the computer you are licensing and an internet-connected computer via
a floppy disk, memory stick or other removable media.
Steps:
STEP 1 - When you purchase any software that
uses the
OtsReg
licensing system, you will be supplied with a
Product License
which matches the product and quantity you have purchased.
If you have misplaced your product license, it may
be retrieved from OtsZone by going to
OtsZone.com on the internet connected
computer
and clicking on "My Licenses" in the site menu
(login if prompted). Click on the PDI number (looks like PABA-RT3S)
to display your
Product License:
You will now
need to highlight the 9 lines of the
Product License from
this web page and then
copy and paste
it into a
text file
on your floppy disk or removable storage device
(explained in next few steps).
Right-click and
copy
the
Product License
text as shown in the above picture. (You can learn about
copying and pasting here
if you are not sure how to do it).
STEP 2 - You now need insert your floppy disk
or removable storage and open it: Go to your desktop,
My Computer -> 3.5 Floppy (A:) (or whichever drive your
removable storage is). You should then RIGHT-click on some white space
in the drive file area and click NEW -> TEXT DOCUMENT:
The new file created will normally be called
"New Text Document.txt". You should
rename
it to "License.txt". (If you are not sure how to
rename, click here
to see the
Text File
section in the Glossary).
STEP 3 - Double-click the License.txt
file you just created, and it should open in Notepad (or other).
RIGHT-click in the white text-typing area of Notepad and click
Paste. You should end up with something like this:
Save this
text file
by going to Notepad's menu FILE -> SAVE. Then close the
Notepad window. Congratulations! You now have successfully
obtained your
Product License.
Now you need to take the floppy disk or removable storage, with
Product License
on it, back to your non-internet-connected machine.
STEP 4 - If you have not done so already,
install your new software on the computer you wish to license.
STEP 5 - You should now be back at the
machine you wish to license. Insert your floppy disk or removable
storage and then run the new software. You will now see the
OtsReg
window, requesting a
Product License.
Click on the "Enter/Edit..." button:
STEP 6 - You should now see a window titled
"OtsReg - Enter/Edit Product License". You need to
copy and paste
the
Product License
previously saved in the License.txt file. Go to
My Computer -> 3.5 Floppy (A:) (or whichever disk is your
removable storage) and double-click on License.txt. Highlight and
copy
the
Product License
and return to the
OtsReg
window (use Windows Taskbar if you can't see OtsReg window) and
click on the Paste button:
Click the "OK" button at the bottom of this window.
After this, you should see
OtsReg
reporting the
Product License
"Installed and valid".
STEP 7 - You now need to obtain a
Machine License.
Click on the "Obtain" button:
An "Important Note" window will pop up. Read this
carefully and click "OK" down the bottom when finished.
STEP 8 - You should now see a window titled
"OtsReg - Obtain Machine License from OtsZone.com".
As you are licensing a non-internet-connected machine you can't use the
"Automatic..." button to obtain the
Machine License.
Instead you will need to use the Manual 3-step method.
(Note: If it is inconvenient to obtain a
Machine License
immediately, there is another temporary option. Simply click on the
"OK" button down the very bottom of the
"Obtain Machine License..." window, and a
7-day temp license will be offered. You click on the
"Create temp license" button in the bottom
right-hand corner of the main
OtsReg
window, and this will get you running the software in the meantime.)
To start the Manual 3-step method, first, click the
"Copy" button next to Manual Method: Step 2
which will
copy
the
Machine License Request
(5 lines of text):
STEP 9 - Open the License.txt file
on your floppy disk or removable storage again and
paste
the
Machine License Request
a few lines under the entire
Product License
(to keep them clearly separated). Save License.txt.
STEP 10 - You will now need to take the
floppy disk or removable storage back to the internet-connected machine.
On this machine, open a web browser and go to:
http://OtsZone.com/license.html
Copy
the
Machine License Request
from the text file "License.txt" and
paste
it into the web form, then click "Create License...":
STEP 11 - You should see your new
Machine License
(1 line of text).
Copy and paste
this
Machine License
into your License.txt file, a few lines underneath the
Machine License Request:
After this has been done, save the License.txt file and
return to your non-internet-connected machine.
STEP 12 - Now that you are back at your
non-internet-connected machine, open your License.txt file
from the floppy disk or removable storage and
copy and paste
the
Machine License
into
OtsReg
as shown in the picture below. (It won't matter if
OtsReg
has since been closed as the
Machine License
will still be valid until you make major changes to your computer.
If it was closed, run the software again from your desktop and enter the
Product License
if requested, and then the new
Machine License
you have just acquired.)
Click "OK" at the very bottom of the window, once the
Machine License
is in place.
STEP 13 - You should see
"Installed and valid" in both the
Product License and
Machine License
areas now. Well done! You can now click
"Run Application" in the bottom right-hand corner of
OtsReg.
You have completed the licensing process.
FINAL NOTES - Always keep your
Product License
safe and private. This represents what you have purchased.
If you experience any problems with audio or using the software,
be sure to see the software's built-in help file which
covers all areas of the program.
